Frontier Developments has backtracked on its decision to use generative AI in Jurassic World Evolution 3 after being called out by fans.
The studio had confirmed it would be using generative AI to create portraits of scientists via a disclosure published on Steam (thanks GameSpot), and prospective players were less than impressed with the move.
“Imagine having the foresight to not try and have serious self control or even critical thinking skills as a human being [to simply] just not do this,” said one player in a lengthy Steam Community thread criticizing the studio.
“Just removed the game from my wishlist. Won’t be buying it unless Frontier shows artists and players some respect,” added another.
Frontier quickly thanked Steam users for their “feedback” and confirmed it has now “opted to remove the use of generative AI for scientist portraits within Jurassic World Evolution 3.”
Corporate vs. worker and fan views on Gen AI
Generative AI is a divisive topic within the video game industry. Major companies such as Microsoft, EA, Embracer, Sony, and Epic Games have all thrown their weight behind the technology, often lauding its ability to reduce production costs and timescales while ushering in entirely new experiences.
Many workers, however, remain skeptical. Last month, voice actor union SAG-AFTRA filed an unfair labor practice against Epic Games after the company introduced an AI-voiced version of Darth Vader into Fortnite, albeit with permission from the estate of Darth Vader voice actor James Earl Jones. At the time, SAG-AFTRA was striking for better AI protections for its union members—which it subsequently delivered.

Back in March, independent senior AI programmer and former EA software engineer David ‘Rez’ Graham told GDC 2025 attendees that he was concerned generative AI will ultimately result in the “death of art” by trivializing and poorly imitating the work of human creatives.
“AI is entirely derivative. By definition it’s derivative. It’s trained off of massive data. It derives the answer from that data. It doesn’t create, it merges. That’s what it’s doing,” he said in a fascinating talk.
In addition, the 2025 State of the Game Industry survey revealed that only 13 percent of developers are actually feeling “positive” about the dawn of generative AI. Meanwhile, 30 percent of respondents suggested it will have an outright “negative” impact on the industry.
