Game distribution platform Itch.io has augmented its service with a small, but potentially handy feature for devs: coupon codes.
Devs who sell or distribute games on Itch will now be able to create limited sales tied to coupon codes, which they can create in whatever quantities they need.
As the ever-popular Steam Sales have proven, discounts are a potent tool for game developers looking to juice sales, so having the power to create coupons for use in promotional efforts is a boon for devs on Itch.
While the platform is best known as a hub for free or pay-what-you-want indie games, in recent years it’s done brisk business and expanded to offer devs an “early access” game toolkit and an open revenue-sharing model (though devs remain free to contribute zero percent of their Itch revenues to the platform.)
However, that expansion seems tinged with a note of caution; earlier this year Itch cofounder Amos Wenger outlined the platform’s hopes for the future, nothing that “with all we’ve improved so far with improving the tools, we have a way for us to be sustainable and healthy and keep our values where they are. So when you ask what’s next, it’s slowing down.”
